Where’s Webster?

As the primaries wound down, I felt something missing but I couldn’t quite figure it out.

Did we completely flake and miss a local primary? Did we forget to staff a Chelsea Clinton visit to Ossipee?

No. It was Webster.

Where is Hugh Webster?

I know he doesn’t face a primary opponent in his bid to unseat Democrat Brad Miller from the 13th congressional district, but Hugh has been persona non-grata as far as I can tell.

A sort-of slick Web site at www.websterforcongress.com, but no cards, no flowers. No phone calls.

Then, sure enough, some Webster goodness. Friday’s e-mail box brought this, from Webster For Congress.

Read it in your Hugh Webster voice. No, no your Hugh Webster voice has to go slower than that.

YANCEYVILLE, NC — Former State Senator and Congressional candidate Hugh Webster said that, given Brad Miller’s liberal spending habits, he is not at all surprised to see how low Miller was rated by the National Taxpayers Union.

The ratings recently released by the National Taxpayers Union show just how liberal those spending habits are.

Every year, the National Taxpayers Union rates U.S. Representatives and Senators on every vote that affects taxes, spending, debt and regulatory burdens on consumers and taxpayers. Ratings range from 0-100 with higher scores going to members of Congress whose voting record shows they are strong supporters of responsible tax and spending policies. The lower the score, the bigger the spender.

According to the most recent ratings released by the National Taxpayers Union, which analyzed voting records of the 110th Congress, 1st Session 2007, Brad Miller earned an “F”, with an extremely low rating of 4%. Miller’s low rating showed that he was more liberal in spending than Barack Obama, whose support of wasteful spending earned him a 5% rating.

Out of North Carolina’s 13 elected Representatives, only 3 — all Republicans — earned an “A” grade from the National Taxpayers Union.

Senator Hugh Webster, who spent 12 years in the North Carolina Senate fighting for the state’s taxpayers, believes the people of North Carolina deserve better. While serving the taxpayers of North Carolina in the General Assembly, Senator Webster NEVER voted for a tax increase and led the fight to reduce spending in the state’s liberal-controlled government. In Washington, as Representative of North Carolina’s 13th District, Webster will continue to fight for the taxpayers to reduce spending and abolish the tax code once and for all.

A little tame for Hugh’s standards, I guess, but it’s better than nothing.

I long for the days of yore, when Hugh’s media efforts had some pizazz, as when he ran an ad in the Times-News during his campaign against Wiley Wooten that featured the “Webster’s New World Dictionary” definition of the word “wiley.”

There should be some interesting races this fall, but none holds more promise than Hugh versus Brad Miller. Of course Hugh has no money and likely won’t be getting any and the district is completely gerrymandered to favor Miller. Plus Miller wouldn’t get on a stage with a Republican if his life depended on it. But Hugh should put up a good fight, and I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t.

I’ll also be disappointed if Hugh resorts to the kind of crap that Vernon Robinson used against Miller two years ago, including implying that Miller is gay because he and his wife, who have been unable to get pregnant, don’t have children. If you stumble upon this, Hugh, remember that you know better.

In the meantime, here’s Hugh’s myspace page.

Tax season is over. It’s time to do a little politicking.
